What Am I Holding Onto?

The Inner Healing Experience

Heart Check

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!” — Isaiah 43:18–19

Kingdom Truth

Sometimes the greatest obstacle to moving forward isn’t what’s ahead of us—it’s what we’re still holding onto.

We often think we’re waiting on God, when in reality, God is waiting for us to release what no longer belongs in our hands.

Not everything we’re carrying is meant to stay with us.

Some things served a purpose for a season, but they were never meant to become permanent residents in our hearts.

The question isn’t whether you’re holding onto something.

The question is…

Is it helping you grow, or is it keeping you stuck?

❤️ Heart Check

Ask yourself:

What am I holding onto?

Sit quietly with the Lord.

Don’t try to come up with the “right” answer.

Allow the Holy Spirit to gently reveal whatever has taken hold of your heart.

What’s Really Happening?

Maybe you’re holding onto…

  • A painful memory

  • A broken relationship

  • A disappointment

  • A dream that didn’t happen

  • Control

  • Fear of what’s next

  • Regret

  • Shame

  • Guilt

  • An old version of yourself

  • The need to be understood

  • The need to be right

  • The approval of others

Sometimes we hold onto things because they’re familiar.

Even when they’re hurting us.

God’s Truth

God never asks us to release something because He wants to leave us empty.

He asks us to release it because He wants to fill our hands, and our hearts, with something better.

Every act of surrender creates room for God’s peace, wisdom, healing, and purpose.

Release is not losing.

Release is trusting.

Inner Healing Practice

Today, imagine you’re standing before Jesus with open hands.

What are you still gripping tightly?

Write it down.

Then pray:

“Lord, I don’t want to carry what You never asked me to hold. Teach me how to trust You enough to let it go.”

Journal Prompt

Complete these sentences:

  • Today I realize I’ve been holding onto…

  • I’ve been afraid to let it go because…

  • If I release it, I believe God can…

  • Today, I choose to trust God with…

Prayer

Father,

Search my heart.

Reveal anything I have been holding onto that is preventing me from walking in the freedom You have for me.

Give me the courage to release fear, disappointment, shame, regret, control, and every burden that no longer belongs in this season.

Help me trust that whatever I place in Your hands is safer than keeping it in my own.

Teach me that surrender is not weakness—it is an act of faith.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

Spirit • Soul • Body Insight

Spirit

Surrender deepens our trust in God and opens our hearts to His leading.

Soul

Holding onto unresolved emotions can keep us mentally and emotionally stuck. Releasing them creates space for peace and renewed thinking.

Body

The stress of carrying emotional burdens often shows up physically through tension, fatigue, headaches, disrupted sleep, or a constant feeling of heaviness. As we surrender what we’ve been holding, we often experience greater rest and ease.

Declaration

Today I release what no longer belongs in my life.

I choose trust over control.

I choose surrender over fear.

I choose freedom over familiarity.

My hands are open.

My heart is open.

God is leading me into a new season.
