Where Did the Story Really Begin?

Sometimes the beginning of your testimony isn’t where you think it is.

Most people believe their story begins with the biggest event.

The divorce.

The diagnosis.

The addiction.

The abuse.

The betrayal.

The loss.

But what if your story began long before that?

What if the event wasn’t the beginning at all?

What if it was simply the moment everything hidden finally surfaced?

As a testimony writing coach, one of the first things I help people discover is this:

Your testimony doesn’t always begin with what happened to you. It often begins with what was shaping you before it happened.

Every Story Has Roots

Imagine a tree.

People notice the branches because they’re visible.

They admire the leaves.

They see the fruit.

But everything the tree becomes started underground.

Stories are much the same.

Before the chapter everyone remembers, there were years of experiences quietly forming beliefs, fears, hopes, and expectations.

Maybe your story began…

• In a home where love was inconsistent.

• With parents who were doing the best they could.

• As a child who learned to stay quiet to keep the peace.

• The moment you started believing you weren’t enough.

• When responsibility came before childhood.

• When you learned to survive instead of simply living.

Those moments may seem small.

But they became the roots of the story that followed.

The Event Isn’t Always the Beginning

Someone might say,

“My testimony is about surviving divorce.”

Maybe.

But perhaps the story really began years earlier when they believed they had to earn love.

Another person says,

“My testimony is about overcoming addiction.”

Maybe.

Or perhaps the story began when they started using pain to numb pain.

Someone else wants to write about healing after rejection.

But what if the real beginning was the first time they believed they weren’t wanted?

When we discover where the story truly began, the testimony becomes richer, more honest, and more meaningful.

Ask Better Questions

When I coach someone through writing their testimony, I don’t immediately ask,

“What happened?”

Instead, I ask questions like these:

• What was your life like before everything changed?

• What kind of child were you?

• What did you long for?

• What did you believe about yourself?

• What environment shaped you?

• What patterns existed before the crisis?

• What was God preparing you for, even when you couldn’t see it?

Those answers often reveal the true beginning.

A Writing Exercise

Instead of writing about the biggest event in your life today, write about what came before it.

Finish these sentences:

• Before everything changed, I was…

• Growing up, I believed…

• The message I heard over and over was…

• I didn’t realize it then, but…

• Looking back now, I can see…

Don’t worry about making it perfect.

Simply tell the truth.

You may discover that what you thought was Chapter One is actually Chapter Five.

God Was Writing Before You Were

One of the most beautiful truths about testimony writing is realizing that God was already present before the breakthrough.

He was there in your childhood.

He was there in your waiting.

He was there in your questions.

He was there in your mistakes.

He was there in the moments you didn’t yet recognize His hand.

Your testimony isn’t simply the story of how you found God.

It’s the story of how God never stopped pursuing you.

This is why I don’t help people simply write books.

I help them discover the story beneath the story.

Because once you uncover where your testimony truly begins, writing becomes clearer.

The chapters connect.

The message becomes stronger.

And readers don’t just learn what happened to you…

They begin to understand why your story matters.

Writer’s Reflection

Take a few quiet moments with these questions:

• Where did I always think my story began?

• What happened before that moment?

• What beliefs were already forming?

• What patterns can I now recognize?

• Where can I see God’s hand before I even knew He was working?

You may find that your testimony didn’t begin with your greatest pain.

It began with a God who was faithfully writing your story long before you ever picked up the pen.
